Hello Everybody, for today's missing persons episode we are going to be covering the Daniel Morcombe case. The disappearance and tragic death of a 13-year-old boy. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established in honor of Daniel Morcombe to make Australia a safer place for children. It was founded by parents Bruce and Denise after their son was abducted and murdered in December 2003 while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. The aims of the Foundation are to educate children and young people about how to stay safe in physical and online environments and to support young victims of crime.

On 7 December 2003 Daniel Morcombe waited for the bus at an official bus stop under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass. Daniel had planned to catch the 1:35 pm bus to the sunshine plaza but the bus had broken down and according to witness accounts he was still standing at the bus stop at 2:10 pm. When another bus finally arrived Daniel was gone. Tips after his disappearance say that there was a man standing behind him the whole time and he disappeared when daniel disappeared.
On the 13 of August 2011, Daniels remains were found. He was killed by Brett Peter Cowan. Daniel's remains were found when Brett confessed to the police during a sting operation. Getting into the details on the day brett was able to get to daniel by luring Daniel into his car offering him a ride to the Sunshine Plaza then he took daniel to the bushland attempted to --- him but Daniel tried to run and Brett choked him to death. Then Brett took Daniels's body to the nearby bushland and buried daniel.
But before we get into Brett we need to cover the investigation but first, we would like to tell you about the Daniel Morcombe foundation. But back to the investigation. A clay statue of Brett Peter Cowen was placed where he was abducted from they shortly received over 300 tips saying that that was the guy they saw on the day of the kidnapping. They then created A Mr big police operation which is when a group of police created a fake gang and they then slowly earn the trust of a suspect in this operation they had an “initiation” where they asked him to admit all his crimes so they could make it “go away” he then admitted to killing and raping daniel. When they asked where the body was he led them right to it.
Next, we are going to talk about Brett Peter Cowen who was the number one suspect for the police and the person who was charged with Daniels's murder. . So Brett was a very bad guy who was living in the area around where Daniel lived. Now when I say bad guy I mean bad guy he had two previous child sexual abuse claims. The first happened in 1987 when he was serving community service time in a park due to drug offences. At the park, he took a seven-year-old child into the toilet cubicle and raped them. This offense got him a two-year sentence in jail but he only served half the sentence.
The second was committed in 1993 in a caravan park where he and his girlfriend were staying. There he lured a six-year-old boy into an abandoned car park where he raped him and punctured his lung. But this little boy was so strong that after brett left him assuming he was dead he walked to a nearby petrol station. Where they thought he had been hit by a car because of the severity of the injuries. This crime got him sentenced to 7 years but once again he only served half of this time.
This case was something straight out of an action spy movie, the police work was very impressive and we are very happy the parents got closure.
